Top Tips for Bands on Facebook (Part One)

So you’ve started a band, made some music, joined Facebook and set up a Page – what now? Of course, your family and friends will be the first port of call but after that building up those ‘likes’ can become tricky.
Here’s our top tips for promoting your band on Facebook:
Include Your Fans
Fans will always want to know more about you. Gone are the days when the only time you could find out more about an artist was when they appeared on Parkinson. Nowadays, information is just a click away and you should be sure that that click takes them to your page, not to Wikipedia.
Be personal with your posts – upload photos from backstage, on the tour bus and in the studio, be the first to announce tour dates, etc. Fans want to be allowed into your world and will appreciate the extra effort you put in.

Music Isn’t Everything
Of course, you’re in a band and of course you’re into music. But I bet you’re into more than that aren’t you? Take a quick look at any music blog or the NME and you’ll notice that bands are always being watched for where they eat, what clothes they wear, the books they read, and more.
Fans look up to bands and artists, they follow their lead, so let your fans know about all your interests and not just your new single.
Ask Other Artists For Help
Having been a band for a while now, you’ll doubtless have supported other bands, probably on more than one occasion, and now have a pretty good relationship with them. They’ll have been in your position once before and will know that a good recommendation can go a long way.
Ask a band you’re friends with to post your new music track or video to their wall (making sure they link back to your Facebook Page). And don’t forget to return the favour, they might want you to help them promote their single next time and you should be more than willing to.

Events
So you’re playing a show, and you’ve probably posted about it too, but have you made it an event? Each time you post an event it will show up in your fans’ news feed and each time someone RSVPs to that event, that RSVP shows up in their news feed as well. This will spread the word about your event far more than a single post on your wall.
Whatever you do, don’t think that just because the venue you’re playing up has created an Event that you don’t need to. They have one set of fans and you have yours, you cannot presume that all your fans Like the venue’s Facebook Page.
Finally, gigs aren’t the only things that can be listed as an Event. Maybe your band is making an appearance on TV, or your new single/album being released – all of these are Events in their own right and your fans should know about them.
More Than Just Words
Facebook allows you to upload photos, videos and music, not just text. So take full advantage of this and post away with more than just text. This is a very simple, but effective way of grabbing a user’s attention, because let’s face it, a picture really can speak a thousand words.
