Building Re:Yak – The Engine Behind Lucy & Yak’s Take-Back Scheme

Re:Yak

Deliverables

Web Development, Shopify, Custom App Development

Lucy & Yak’s commitment to circular fashion took a practical step forward with the launch of Re:Yak - a custom-built Shopify app developed by Bozboz to power garment returns in exchange for store credit. Starting in-store and later scaling online, Re:Yak has become a standout example of sustainable innovation with real impact.

Lucy & Yak is an ethical fashion brand built on sustainability, transparency and community. Known for their distinctive dungarees and bright aesthetic, they’ve carved out a passionate following with customers who care as much about values as they do about style.

To further their mission, Lucy & Yak developed Re:Yak - a bold initiative that allows customers to return their pre-loved ‘Yaks’ in exchange for store credit. By incentivising returns, Re:Yak helps keep clothing in circulation and out of landfill.

The Challenge

Lucy & Yak needed a seamless, scalable system to power Re:Yak - one that could process garment returns in-store and, eventually, online. Off-the-shelf solutions didn’t offer the control or simplicity required for a scheme involving multiple stakeholders across stores, logistics, and customer communications.

The solution had to be:

  • Intuitive for staff use in-store
  • Capable of integrating with existing Shopify and Klaviyo setups
  • Robust enough to handle thousands of transactions with accuracy
  • Flexible enough to support future changes and third-party integrations

The Approach

Bozboz designed and built Re:Yak as a bespoke Shopify app using Shopify’s React library, underpinned by a Laravel backend. Initially launched in summer 2023 for Lucy & Yak’s retail stores, Re:Yak has since expanded to cover online returns via logistics partner Swap.

The system is modular and maintainable, with key components including:

  • An embedded Shopify app for in-store tablet and desktop use
  • A Laravel-powered backend that handles real-time and queued transactions
  • Klaviyo integration to automate personalised voucher emails
  • API endpoints that allow Swap to trigger transactions on receipt of returned items

In-store, Re:Yak is fast and immediate - enabling staff to process returns and issue vouchers on the spot. Online, it operates asynchronously: Swap notifies the app when parcels are received, triggering the same flows as in-store.

This modularity means future integrations - or replacements - can be made with minimal disruption. The system is now fully embedded across all 15 UK retail locations and online.

The Outcome

Since launch, Re:Yak has helped Lucy & Yak take meaningful action on textile waste while strengthening customer loyalty:

  • 33,600+ items returned and kept out of landfill
  • £350,000+ in store credit issued
  • 87% of returned items were in resaleable condition

With a streamlined staff experience, automated communications, and easy expansion to online returns, Re:Yak has become a core part of Lucy & Yak’s sustainability offer.

And thanks to its flexible architecture, the system is primed for future growth - and could be readily adapted for other Shopify businesses with similar ambitions.
